Bangladesh has one of the highest infant mortality rates in the world with 53 out of 1000 children failing to live beyond their first year and 69 out of 1000 children dying before attaining the age of 5. The maternal mortality rate also stands at 380 per 100000 live births. To counter this problem New York based nonprofit organization, Touching Souls International(TSI) has launched a free mother and child primary health care services to cater to disadvantaged people who are poor and have little access to proper health care facilities.
This project is being run by out-door of Nurture General Hospital at a nominal registration of Tk-20/- per patient which is aimed at providing health care facilities for the poorest of poor. The out-door department works for five days per week catering to the needs of the mother both prior to the delivery and after it and children. This program is being run by well trained pediatrician, gynecologists and nurses who have been specially trained in mother and child care services.
Apart from tendering health care to the mothers and the children, the nonprofit organization, Touching Souls International and Nurture are also using this program to generate awareness about the well-being of the mother and the child. The doctors and nurses involved in the program educate mothers on how to take care of themselves as well as their children. They are educated on the requirement of nourished food, importance of vaccination and tendering care in case of ailments.
This program has shown encouraging signs since its launch. More and more women are enrolling themselves under this program. Most of the satisfied mothers are promoting this among their relatives and friends which have helped in reaching out to more people. Touching Souls International and Nurture are aiming to bring the rate of mortality down among the poor people who have very little or no access to government run schemes.
The charity organization, Touching Souls International has been involved in the many programs relating to health care, family welfare and education in the different parts of Bangladesh. All these projects are being run in some of the most remote parts of Bangladesh which have very little access to health care and educational facilities.
