Touching Souls International a New York based nonprofit organization has been actively trying to restore vision in the lives of thousands of people in many districts in Bangladesh. It has been offering cataract surgeries with lens implant free of charge for the poor people. In these poverty-stricken regions of Bangladesh thousands of people have lost their vision due to cataract which is a curable condition. In most cases poverty prevents people from undergoing these surgeries while in other cases ignorance or access to proper medical facility denies people a chance to see the world again.
Touching Souls International which has been active in charity and community development activity has conducted many camps and conducted free cataract surgeries for people in real need. It has been well supported by Bangladesh National Blind Society, Mymensingh in its endeavor. It has also conducted many intraocular insertion (IOL) surgeries for people free of cost. The organization stands by its mission of eradicating curable blindness in Bangladesh and helping economically disadvantaged people in the country.
One of the key areas of concern that was noticed by the organization was the post-operative care for people undergoing cataract surgeries. Most of these patients undergoing cataract surgeries owing to poverty and illiteracy do not take proper post-operative care resulting in infections and other complications. To deal with this situation Touching Souls International is providing free post-operative care to the patients undergoing cataract surgery.
As a part of the post-operative care Touching Souls International is providing complimentary glasses to the patients undergoing cataract surgeries. It is also ensuring that the patients stay in the BNBS Eye Hospital in Mymensingh for two days after their surgeries. On the third day patients are released wherein they and their accompanying attendants are given education on the dos and the don’ts they need to ensure at home for success of the surgery.
The non-profit organization also conducts a review checkup for the patients after a gap of three weeks where they are provided with glasses in case needed free of cost. There has been tremendous response to these camps conducted in these backward districts. In each camp approximately 60 disadvantaged individuals are undergoing cataract removal surgeries. The program which began in 2005 has till date 801 free cataract surgeries conducted by Touching Souls International.
The nonprofit organization is also running awareness campaigns in the rural areas of Bangladesh to deal with this problem. Cataract occurs whenever protein within the actual lens associated with the actual eye begins to coagulate, developing the thick white-colored coating regarding opaque materials. This is helping in early detection of the problem and conducting immediate surgeries to restore proper vision.
Touching Souls International has been carrying out many charity programs for the people apart from cataract removal. These include cleft lip surgery, club foot surgery, artificial limb, palliative care, maternal health and child health programs, 2 schools, scholarships, arsenic awareness and fellowship for environmental journalists. In the last few years it has been supporting in bringing about a change in the lives of many people who have little access to health care facilities.
