Since her childhood, Hamila was a very unhappy child. She was born with cleft-lip. Her childhood has been very different from other children of her age. Her eyes gazed over the fields where she could witness the girls of her age engaging themselves in different types of fun games. It had been really depressing for a child who spent her childhood with cleft lip. She was fortunate to be born of supportive parents who did not want her daughter to miss school. It was one of her teachers in school, she said, has suggested her to go for a cleft lip surgery conducted by a non-profit organization, Touching Souls International.
When the team of Touching Souls International came in contact with Halima for the first time, we were surprised to hear her thoughts on life. Her cleft-lip has somehow changed her views on life and that was reflected in the way she spoke. “You become non-existent in the society, people avoid you, you start considering yourself a burden and this is all due to my facial birth defect”. Our non-profit organization has dealt with many such issues while working on the Cleft lip Project in co-operation with the Burn unit of Dhaka Medical College in Bangladesh.
Our non-profit organization really considers themselves fortunate to associate ourselves with benevolent acts in the society. After a successful completion of a cleft lip surgery, the smile of joy mixed with the feeling of a new life waiting for them brought tears to the eyes.
Making a difference in the life of an individual makes you feel like a proud inhabitant of society.
