There is a well known saying, “Kindness is the language which the deaf can hear and the blind can see.” In Bangladesh, there are thousands of poor people who are blind, mainly due to cataract. The world for these people comprises of only one color and that is black. A simple surgery and insertion of an intraocular lens can be a sure shot cure for them. But in developing countries like Bangladesh, many people with cataracts are still reeling under the darkness. The problem persists primarily due to two reasons. One is lack of awareness and the other is presence of proper infrastructure.
The deficit of the two is being bridged by non profit organizations like Touching Souls International for example. A helping hand like Touching Souls International has been making a huge difference in the lives of these people. In an effort to extend the field of its expertise and help, Touching Souls International has been conducting medical camps and treatment as well as surgery facilities in the remotest parts of Bangladesh.
With its most important project, “Eradication of curable blindness in Bangladesh”, Touching Souls International has been successful in bringing back vision in lives of thousands of blind people in Bangladesh. As a part of this project, Touching Souls International has conducted cataract surgery camps, where cataract blind patients from remote villages undergo cataract surgery which is done free of cost along with a lens implant, by experienced eye surgeons.
Patients suffering from cataract blindness are examined, and the ones with acute cases are taken to Myensingh, BNBS hospital to get their cataract surgery with lens implant done free of cost. Upon the successful completion of the surgery and a proper post operation care, the patients are given a guideline of how to take care of themselves. The organization has also been providing patients with free glasses in the Weekly post-operative checkups.
Touching Souls International has been fighting to eradicate this disease from the very root from this nation. Their work has been commendable in this regard. In order to cope up with the huge number of cases, they have taken it in their stride to train ophthalmic staff in villages. Experienced ophthalmic nurses are trained to assist doctors during surgeries and local community health workers are trained to identify those in need of cataract treatment so that they can benefit from the medical camps and free surgeries.
Touching Souls International has really opened the doorway to a brighter life for those suffering from cataract blindness in Bangladesh. Their helping hand has actually worked as the magic wand that has helped the sufferers of cataract blindness to walk out from darkness to light. .
