We close our eyes for a second, and instantly the world comes to a standstill. Now, imagine the world of people who are blind – their world is in the dark forever! The difficulty of people with blindness is so terrible that they have no other choice but depend on others for everything throughout their lives. Especially for the less fortunate people with blindness, who have been deprived from receiving proper education or sufficient financial support, beggary becomes the only means of survival.
Vision is a necessity that we cannot do without. Many of us are lucky enough to have the power of vision to see all the beautiful things there is on Earth. There are thousands of unfortunate people whose world begin and end in darkness. A blind needs help, not sympathy. We can help them see by offering proper treatment or by supporting them financially. This simple act of philanthropy can change a person’s life forever. The joy that we can bring in someone’s life by offering help to get back their vision can bring immense happiness to our lives.
Cataract is considered as one of the major reasons for adult blindness in Bangladesh and there are currently 750,000 men and women who suffer from cataract blindness. Cataract blindness is certainly curable by simple surgical procedures. But for some people it often becomes difficult to bear the cost. For the disadvantaged people living in rural Bangladesh, financial crisis, lack of health care facilities, fear about surgery and lack of knowledge are the primary reasons for which they are devoid of the advantage of getting a cataract surgery. When money becomes the main concern, people often tend to neglect or overlook health issues. People have a general tendency of ignoring a cataract at its initial stage, which increase the risk of blindness.
Touching Souls International is one such dedicated nonprofit organization that tries to bridge the gap between the cost of eye care and the people who cannot afford it. With various act of philanthropy, such as medical camps and programs, Touching Soul International is bringing in hope to the lives of the blind people living in rural areas of Bangladesh. They are conducting various charity programs in some of the most backward regions in the country. They are conducting eye camps in remote villages where no updated medical facilities are available.
At these camps, patients are screened and examined by doctors and those selected for surgery are taken to BNBS Eye Hospital in Mymensingh to get their cataract removal surgeries done free of cost by expert doctors. After the surgery these patients are kept in observation for the next three days. After two days they undergo a post-operative checkup and are brought back to their homes.
