Eighty seven year old Karimon Begum, of Raoty, Kishoregonj, Bangladesh could not see for almost ten years. A decade ago she was diagnosed with cataract. Having a cataract surgery was only in her dreams. For most of the people of Bangladesh cataract surgery is not affordable. And if they become cataract blind, in most cases they remain blind for rest of their life being a burden to their family and to society.
Karimon Begum was very lucky to be selected for her free cataract surgery in the eye camp on December 6th, 2010, provided by Touching Souls International in Banail, Kishoregonj, Bangladesh. About 1300 people were screened for their cataract. More than 300 patients got their free eye medications. 195 patients were selected for cataract removal surgery in 4 different groups. These patients were taken to BNBS Mymensingh Eye Hospital for their cataract surgery. On December 8th, after their cataract removal surgery they were brought back to their original Home Office. All the expenses for this purpose are provided by Touching Souls International, a New York based nonprofit organization.
Karimon Begum is so happy to see again after her surgery. Since 2005 Touching Souls International provided free cataract removal surgery with lens implant to 776 needy cataract blind patients. The goal of Touching Souls International is to eradicate curable blindness in Bangladesh and we are seeking funding to expand the help to economically disadvantaged areas of Bangladesh..
