The great American philosopher and educational reformer John Dewey once said “Education is not preparation for life; education is life itself.” Education has always been known to bring about a change in the society economically and lead to social upliftment of the people. In a bid to support education of the poor and the underprivileged students in the backward region of Bangladesh, Touching Souls International has been regularly providing scholarship to a meritorious student from the fifth to the tenth grade in regular Scholarship Award Ceremonies held each year.
The New York based non-profit organization has been working in charity projects in health care, education and safe environment for economically disadvantaged people in Bangladesh for the last 25 years. The nonprofit organization has been helping the poor and the downtrodden students of Bangladesh to create a better future for themselves, their families and bring in much needed development to the society.
School dropout rate has always been alarmingly high in Bangladesh with an estimated 47% of the students dropping out of the schools. This rate is even higher for the female students. In most case students have to drop out of school owing to poverty. This social problem is denying many meritorious students in Bangladesh a chance to study and achieve higher goals in life. Touching Souls International is supporting these meritorious students and every year 60 to 120 students are provided with scholarship to continue with their education.
The students are selected for this scholarship based on their merit. Students from the fifth right up till the tenth grade are eligible for this scholarship. Poor students or those who have been orphaned at a young age and are unable provide for their schooling expenses are selected based on the grades they receive in school. Upon which their financial need is verified by Touching Souls International which takes care of the educational expenses from there on.
School Scholarship Award has been a huge success with many meritorious students who would have been forced to drop out getting a second chance to fulfill their dream and rise in life. In the long run this will economically uplift many families helping reduce poverty in Bangladesh which is placed low in most of the social indexes. Such educational scholarship helps in community development and carrying out other schemes of health care easily.
Most of the scholarship awards projects are carried out in the regions which have little or no access to the government schemes on education. Touching Souls International has also been actively running two schools one for the kids in village and one for those in slums. It has been funding the Banail village school in the district of Kishoregang. The school is provided with regular funding for its day to day function.
