10 month old Md. Zubayed had a cystic hygroma from birth in the left side of his chest. This generally occurs as the baby grows in the womb. It forms from pieces of material that carry fluid and white blood cells. The problem could have turned grave and Zubayed could have had chromosomal problem all his life. Born in a poor family hailing from Halishahar, Chittagong there was little hope that he would have been treated owing to acute poverty and lack of access to health care facilities. Touching Souls International a New York based non-profit organization came to the rescue and Zubayed got him operated for the birth defect.
Touching Souls International arranged for the surgery which was conducted at Nurture General Hospital, Chittagong under the supervision of experienced surgeon Dr. Panna Lal Shah and anesthesiologist Dr. S.Dhar. The cyst was removed from Zubayed operated under the general anesthesia on 18th February 2011. Nurture Hospital provided all the logistical support including Operation Theater, nurses and paramedics. Zubayed was discharged on the 23rd of February after remaining under observation for five days during which he showed no signs of post-operative complications.
This surgery which was facilitated by the team of the charity organization has given hope to the entire family especially his parents. Little Zubayed has coped up well after the removal of the cyst and will lead a healthy life. For Touching Souls International this surgery is a part of its long drawn campaign to help the poor and the needy in the remote areas of Bangladesh. These people have very little access to the health care programs run in the rural areas which isn’t adequate to cater to the needs of the people. The high rate of poverty and illiteracy makes the matter worse in these areas.
Touching Souls International has been relentlessly working for the poor and the downtrodden in Bangladesh. It has grass root penetration in some of the most backward regions of the country, thanks to its list of volunteers. It conducts regular eye camps and selects patients for free cataract removal surgery, cleft lip surgery, club foot surgery, artificial limb, palliative care, maternal health, child health and rehabilitation of the paralyzed programs. It has been providing medical aid to people who can least afford it binging about a change in the society.
One of the key initiatives taken by the charity organization has been to provide education to poor children in Bangladesh which has one of the highest illiteracy rates in the world. It funds two schools one for the village kids and another for those living in the slums. Apart from this it also offers scholarships to meritorious students whose education is threatened by poverty or orphanage. Hundreds of children have been a beneficiary of this initiative taken by Touching Souls International.
In the recent years the non-profit organization has been encouraging philanthropists to come forward and help in its causes. It has registered itself as a 501(C)3 Tax-exempt organization and any donation made to Touching Souls International is tax deductible.
