All are not born equal, some are fortunate enough of being born in developed countries and affluent families while some in extreme poverty. The greatest service to mankind is done by those people who ensure food, shelter, clothing and health through their generosity.
Bangladesh is one of the countries in the world that has little access to the basic facilities like health and education. Touching souls International is a nonprofit organization which provides assistance, services and support in health, education and environment for the economically backward people of Bangladesh. This Nonprofit organization has been running medical camps for poor people in rural areas on cataract surgery, cleft -lip, club foot surgery, maternal health and child health. They are training nurses and doctors in palliative care. They are also running schools in slum and providing scholarship to meritorious students.
Touching Souls International has started eye camps in various districts in Bangladesh in 2005. The eye camp project is a part of the organization’s Sight restoration and blindness prevention project. It offers cataract surgeries with lens implant free of charge for the poor people. There are so many poor people in Bangladesh who are cataract blind but can’t afford to go for the surgery or remain blind throughout their lives becoming a burden to their family and society, living a miserable life. This project is a boon for those poor people and since its inception; the nonprofit organization has done more than 900 surgeries with lens implant.
The Nonprofit organization has also conducted many intraocular insertion (IOL) surgeries for people free of cost. This organization stands by its mission to eradicate curable blindness in Bangladesh and is seeking funds to expand its services to the economically backward areas of Bangladesh. Till now they have been successful in conducting number of cataract surgery camps in rural areas like Banail, Nilganz, Koatgaon, Baktiarpur, Maizkhapon, Shakhipur, Savar, Islampur and Kalihati.
In these camps what exactly is done is that more than one thousand patients are screened for cataracts. The selected patients are transported by bus to Mymensingh BNBS hospital to get their surgery done. It is ensured that the patients stay in the BNBS Eye Hospital for next two days. They are released on the third day and their accompanying attendants are educated on the dos and the don’ts at home for success of the surgery. They are taught that cataract occurs whenever protein within eye lens begins to coagulate developing thick white coating .This might help early detection of cataract and help restore vision.
One of the main areas of concern was the post-operative care of the people undergoing cataract surgeries. Most of the people undergoing surgeries due to illiteracy and poverty do not take proper post-operative care leading to infections and other complications. To overcome these problems Touching Souls international is also providing free post-operative care. They are also providing complimentary antibiotic, steroidal eye drops and glasses to the patients. Not only this, the nonprofit organization also conducts review checkups at gap of three weeks where the patients are provided glasses free of cost.
There has been tremendous response to these cataract surgery camps. In each camp around 60 people are undergoing surgery. This program has been a great success for the organization since it started in 2005. Philanthropic missions of Touching Souls International have been a remarkable journey that has brought smile in faces of thousands of people in Bangladesh.
