Former South African President Nelson Mandela once famously said “Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world.” No country or race in the world has prospered without quality education. In a third world country like Bangladesh, education is the greatest weapon to bring about a change. The country has been lacking in elementary education with close 47% of the country’s population standing illiterate. Health care and family welfare projects fail to create impact due to this high rate of illiteracy.
Touching Souls International which has been actively involved in charity projects in the country is resolute in contributing to the future of Bangladesh through education. The New York based charity organization has been supporting charity projects in some of the remotest places in the country which have little or no access to elementary education. Apart from this Touching Souls International also offers educational scholarships to meritorious students who are unable to bear their educational costs due to poverty and orphanage.
The nonprofit organization has been funding the school in the village of Banail in the district of Kishoregang in Bangladesh. This initiative has brought in new hope to the lives of hundreds of students in the village and others from the nearby areas. It has also helped in building this all-weather school to prevent disruption of classes during the monsoon which is so common in Bangladesh. More than 225 students have enrolled in this schools where books and other educational materials are being made available to them.
The immense success of the Banail School has been a huge encouragement for the entire Touching Souls International team which is looking forward to such initiatives in other remote areas of the country to help students realize their dreams and scale up the ladder in the society. The organization is also trying to raise awareness for the importance of education in these areas to encourage parents to enroll their children in the village schools.
Touching Souls International also runs a second school for the kids in the slums. Children in these slums fall easy victim to child labor and petty crimes due to the absence of education and a chance to grow up in the social ladder. This special school provides education to 130 children living in the slums where only a handful people are literate. The non-profit organization also conducts regular awareness campaigns for slum dwellers to send their children to school.
Apart from supporting education, Touching Souls International has been running charity work in health for economically disadvantaged. It conducts cataract removal surgery, cleft lip surgery, club foot surgery, artificial limb, palliative care, maternal health, child health, rehabilitation for paralyzed. It also conducts awareness program against arsenic contamination in water which is becoming one of the biggest threats to Bangladesh with close to 80 million living under the threat.
