Touching Souls International is a dedicated nonprofit organization that provides assistance, support and services in health, education and environmental issues to the economically disadvantaged people of Bangladesh. The eye camps are a part of the organization’s Sight restoration and Blindness Prevention project. These eye camps are being conducted in various districts in Bangladesh since 2005 with a mission to provide eye treatment to more than 1000 people in each location. In addition 60 cataract blind patients can receive free Cataract surgery with lens implant in each camp.
Cataract blindness accounts for 80% blindness in the country and there are regions where 550000 to 750000 adults are cataract blind. Cataract is a clouding on the eye lens due to old age, illness or trauma. This cloudiness damages the eye’s natural ability to direct light and focus image on the retina. Individuals with cataracts frequently experience a loss of vision. A large number of individuals are cataract blind in Bangladesh, a condition that is curable by a minor surgery in most cases. However for most of the poor and backward individuals the surgery is expensive. Financial crisis continues to be the major reason for the cataract blind being denied a surgery. As a result, people with cataract blindness remain blind throughout their lives making them a burden to their families and the society leading to a miserable life. In this kind of surgery the eye surgeon replaces the cloudy natural lens with an artificial lens implant known as interocular lens, to restore vision.
Touching Souls International, with the help of hospitals and health centers are successful in conducting these cataract surgery camps. In these camps the patients are screened and examined for cataracts. The selected patients are transported to Mymensingh BNBS hospital by bus. The surgery is done free of cost. It is ensured that the patient stays there for two days. When they are released, their attendants are educated about following home care so that there are no infections or complications.
Touching Souls International has been successful in conducting number of cataract surgery camps in rural areas of many districts of Bangladesh . Till now they have done more than 904 surgeries with lens implant free of cost. More than 19,000 patients have received eye screening and treatment as a part of the program.
A major area of concern was the post-operative care of the people undergoing cataract surgeries. Most of the patients undergoing surgeries due to illiteracy and poverty do not know how to take proper post-operative care which may lead to infections and complications. To overcome these problems, the organization is also providing free post-operative care. They are providing complimentary glasses to the patients. Not only this, they are also conducting review checkups at a gap of three weeks in which the patients are provided glasses free of cost.
This nonprofit organization with its tremendous efforts is successfully bringing back vision to the eyes of the disabled. The charitable and philanthropic mission of Touching Souls International has been a commendable and remarkable journey that has brought back vision in the eyes of so many disabled people of Bangladesh..
