One of the main problem of Bangladesh is the lack of health care facilities and proper educational infrastructure across the country. The country has a high illiteracy rate with about one third of the population not knowing how to read and write. In terms of health care the stats are dismal compared to most regions of the world with a high infant mortality rate, malnutrition etc. Most of the poor living in the remote areas of the country doesn’t’ have access to government run health programs and cannot afford to go to private practitioners owing to poverty.
With a mission to serve the people of Bangladesh with health care and education facilities, Touching Souls International a New York based non-profit organization has been working relentlessly. Touching Souls International swears by the cause of poor and underprivileged people in Bangladesh and is making every effort to bring about a change in the lives of these people.
Education is the only way to progress in the society and Touching Souls International has taken up the cause of education in Bangladesh. It is running two schools one for the kids in village and one of those living in slums. In these schools more than 350 children are receiving quality education which will help them in realizing their dreams and lift themselves and their families from the struggle due to poverty and illiteracy. Apart from running these schools the charity organization is also offering scholarships to meritorious students whose educational career is threatened by poverty or orphanage. It is also providing fellowship to journalists who research on the environmental issues.
On the health front Touching Souls International has been running regular health camps to provide necessary medical aid to patients who have little access to proper health care facilities. It conducts camps for free cataract removal surgeries, cleft- lip and cleft -pallet surgery. Patients are selected on the severity of the ailment upon which they are taken to hospitals where these surgeries are conducted on them by experienced doctors. Not only that the charity organization also arranges for the post-operative care of these patients and post-surgery review. It also provides free lenses in case of cataract removal surgeries to patients who cannot afford it.
Touching Souls International partners with team doctors from medical institutes like Bangladesh National Blind Society, Mymensingh, Dhaka Medical College Hospital, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University and Nurture General Hospital, who help with the logistics of these surgeries in terms of Operation Theaters, nurses and paramedics.
The non-profit organization has been able to penetrate the grass roots due to the enthusiasm of its volunteers who have taken the job of serving people to a different level. Apart from running these health camps they also raise awareness of about arsenic contamination in water bodies and various myths and superstitions associated with many ailments and diseases. These campaigns have complemented the health camps that are conducted by the charity organization..
