Close your eyes for a moment and imagine what it would be like to live life blind. But what if you were subjected to blindness even though an effective cure existed? This seems like a ridiculous question, when in fact it is a daunting reality that thousands of Bangladesh men and women live with throughout their entire lifetimes.
Touching Souls International is an organization dedicated to bringing sight to the blind.Cataracts is a rampant eye condition among the Bangladeshis. In fact, it is a fairly common condition here in the United States. A cataract is a clouding within the eye’s lens that happens as people begin to age. This clouding prevents light from passing to the retina. As a result, vision becomes blurry.
As time progress, and if left untreated, the clouding grows larger and larger until vision is badly obstructed and the individual is, essentially, blind.Maybe you or someone you know has had cataracts. There is a simple solution – cataract surgery, which quickly and efficiently corrects the problem and restores sight to completion. Unfortunately, the majority of the people in Bangladesh are far too poor to afford the luxury of a cataract surgery. They are far too poor to afford their own sight. The cure is out of reach and so they are forced to live in darkness.
Touching Souls International recognized this heartbreaking issue and, in 2005, began to do something about it. The organization developed an eye sight and blindness prevention project. Setting up their station at an eye camp in a village called Banial, Touching Souls set to work immediately, offering blind Bangladeshis cataract surgery free of charge.
More than free medical services, the dedicated staff of Touching Souls offers a cure.Working alongside Bangladesh National Blind Society, Touching Souls International works relentlessly to cure unnecessary blindness among the people of Bangladesh. To date they have performed over 900 surgeries and lens implants, changing the lives of nearly 1,000 individuals who would have otherwise lived the remainder of their lives in the dark.
With each cataract procedure Touching Soulsperforms they give Bangladeshis the chance to see the faces of their loved ones again. Free cataract surgeries are restoring the daily privilege of seeing the sun rise and watching simple daily tasks that the sighted so easily take for granted. Restoration of sight enables poor Bangladesh men and women to care for themselves once again, relinquishing them and their families of a heavy burden. This singular organization cares about those the world has forgotten and seeks to change lives by restoring sight and independence. Touching Souls International’s benevolent cataract services are made possible by funds given from generous hearts who want to see impoverished lives changed..
